A Great Career
Where will it take me?

Once a young person completes their JTL apprenticeship and are a qualified craftsperson, they will have skills that are in demand and a well-paid career for life. They'll be able to show an employer that they have the basic tools and dedication to succeed in the industry. It offers them excellent financial rewards, long-term employment and ever-changing creative and intellectual challenges. For them, the sky’s the limit.
Whether they are a plumber, electrician, maintenance engineer or heating and ventilating engineer they will enjoy a whole world of opportunities. There are multiple career paths open to them.
They will have a choice of growing and dynamic occupations, in industries employing many thousands of people. The Electrotechnical industry, for example, employs over 150,000 people working within some 20,000 companies. As a qualified craftsperson like an electrician or plumber they can expect to be in demand – after all, every household and business uses electricity and water.

Who knows how they will feel in four years time? The great thing is they will have options open to them. After their apprenticeship, they may decide to end their training there. Or they may decide to go further and progress on to higher education. They could take further qualifications such as a Technician’s Certificate, NVQ Level 4, HNC, HND, BTEC or a degree. All things that give them an edge in the job market, and they can make these choices at any time – straight after they qualify or at any time in their career
They could choose to work for a small local company, or they could work for a large multi-national contracting company and get involved in huge commercial or industrial projects like the construction of an Olympic stadium or an international airport like Heathrow Terminal 5. They could be a key team player in a vast range of projects from repairing homes to building a new a nightclub or cinema to maintaining a hospital operating theatre. They will be using technologies that are always evolving, challenging them to the limit but rewarding them with the knowledge that their input is vital to making it work.

They could take a management role or even decide to run their own company. And they might even think about working abroad as their qualifications will be recognised internationally.
Ultimately, how far they go is up to them!
