Leanne Bateman

20 year old Leanne Bateman is employed by LJ Monks Ltd in Yorkshire and is currently in the second year of her electrical installation apprenticeship with JTL.

Leanne was the first female apprentice to be recruited by LJ Monks Ltd and her appointment was welcomed by everyone in the company, while the feedback received, from both her Site Supervisor and College Tutor, has been very positive. Making great progress with her apprenticeship, she has already done a wide variety of work from water treatment works, to distribution centres and is now working on a large security gatehouse. This has given Leanne the opportunity to travel with her job and she's worked up and down the country on a number of important projects.

After less than 18 months with LJ Monks, Leanne has already been nominated for the company's annual Training and Development Award. This is an award open to employees who are currently on some form of training/development programme within the company.

"I decided on doing an apprenticeship because I didn't want a dead end job and I knew that it would open doors for me and give me options later on. I wanted something hands-on and varied; something that opened doors for me in the future. I decided to become an electrician and applied for a job with the council and LJ Monks.

"It's turned out to be a great move for me and I'm enjoying every minute. I get lots of support, both from my employer and from my JTL Training Officer. It's great to be part of such a fantastic team at LJ Monks.

"My colleagues and fellow apprentices completely accept me, even though I'm the only female apprentice on site at the moment. They just treat me like I'm one of the team and the fact that I'm a girl doesn't come into it. I don't get special treatment because of it, but I don't get any stick for it either.

"Becoming an electrician was just one of the options I had as apprenticeships are available in a wide variety of different careers - with JTL I was presented with the choice between plumbing, engineering maintenance and electrical installation. I certainly don't have any regrets about my chosen career and wouldn't hesitate in recommending it to anyone."
