Awards
WE MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT...LOOK AT OUR AWARDS, THEY JUST KEEP COMING...
As well as JTL's own award ceremonies and its support and funding of the ETF accolades, there are a number of wider industry events that look to recognise apprentices from across the country. Apprentices entered into these awards find themselves competing alongside hundreds and sometimes even thousands of apprentices in a number of different fields - including construction, business, childcare and hairdressing. Winning such an award is by no means easy and those who have done so can be extremely proud of their achievement. A number of JTL apprentices have gone on to win these awards - two of which are highlighted below.
KIERAN LEWIS
JTL electrical apprentice Kieran Lewis was presented with the Learning and Skills Council's (LSC) Personal Achievement Award at the Learners First Awards at Birmingham's Botanical Gardens on Thursday, 16th March 2006.
The Personal Achievement Award is given to young people who have overcome any barriers, difficulties or obstacles to achieve and exceed all expectations. Kieran, who is in the last year of his Advanced Apprenticeship (AA) and employed by MA Broughton Electrical Contractors Ltd in Nottingham, has achieved outstanding results in his training despite coming up against a number of obstacles in his personal life. 24 year old Kieran was struck by tragedy when he had to nurse his dying wife through cancer and then again when his Dad suddenly passed away soon after.
Kieran was nominated for the award by his JTL Training Officer, and was short-listed as one of three finalists. He was announced as the winner on the night and presented with a trophy and a cash prize to the value of £1,000 by TV personality Suzi Perry.
Steve Holbrook, Contracts Director for MA Broughton Electrical Contractors Ltd, said:
"We are delighted that Kieran has been honoured with the Personal Achievement Award and feel proud to call him one of our own. He is a well liked and respected member of the team and certainly deserves the recognition that this award bestows upon him."
NICHOLAS MUWONGE
JTL electrical apprentice wins national prize after teaching himself English
A JTL electrical apprentice won national recognition for outstanding achievement after being presented with the Learners First Awards Personal Achievement Award.
Nicholas Muwonge, from Edmonton, was one of 12 national finalists at the Learners First Awards an annual event hosted by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) to reward outstanding learners completing work-based Apprenticeships in all industries.
Nicholas, who is completing an Advanced Apprenticeship in electrical installation with Hounslow Homes Ltd. in Feltham, won a Personal Achievement Award in the 19-24 age category. He attended a prize giving ceremony at Alton Towers on Thursday, where he was presented with gift vouchers worth £200 and a certificate from TV personality, Philippa Forrester.
Nicholas was entered for the Personal Achievement Award because of his remarkable progress as a young learner. He came to the UK from Uganda when he was 16 speaking virtually no English. His father, a medical doctor, remained in Uganda while Nicholas achieved his childhood dream to join his mother and younger brother and sister in London.
Recognised by his employers as a high achiever, Nicholas - having taught himself English within months of his arrival - went on to gain top marks in the first year of his apprenticeship, winning an award from JTL. He now plans to complete his apprenticeship with Hounslow Homes before going on to do an engineering degree at university.
