JTL Assessment

The next stage of the application process is to take the JTL Initial Assessment. This has been designed and developed by the Basic Skills Agency and will demonstrate whether you have the potential to successfully complete your JTL apprenticeship.

The assessment is in two parts:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy

You need to pass both papers at the same time. Only two attempts at the assessment are permitted in any one academic year. So, if you don’t pass both literacy and numeracy at your first attempt, you are only allowed one re-sit, when you must again take and pass both papers.

We will contact you when an Initial Assessment session has been arranged to take place in your local area and invite you to attend. These assessments usually take place between February and August in each academic year. You must make every effort to attend, it’s an important part of the application process. If you can’t, for any reason, contact us on 0800 0852 308. If you don’t attend and don’t tell us, it may be classed as one failed attempt.

If you have certain learning difficulties we can provide you with some support when you take your Initial Assessment. However, you must tell us about your needs before you attend so that we have time to arrange suitable support. Click on the button at the side of this page for more information. As preparation you might like to try our practice Initial Assessment. Either download a paper copy or try the on-line practice.

Approved Candidate List

Once you have successfully completed your Initial Assessment, and provided evidence from an optician that you are not colour blind, you will be placed on the JTL Approved Applicant List. This list is circulated to all employers in your local area who have enquired about taking on a JTL apprentice. If an employer is interested, you will be invited to an interview with them. But, you should also keep looking for a job yourself - don't rely on JTL to find you one.
