Where will it take me?

Once you complete your JTL apprenticeship and are a qualified craftsperson, you’ll have skills that are in demand and a well-paid career for life. You’ll be able to show an employer that you have the basic tools and dedication to succeed in the industry. It offers you excellent financial rewards, long-term employment and ever-changing creative and intellectual challenges. For you, the sky’s the limit.

Whether you’re a plumber, electrician, maintenance engineer or heating and ventilation engineer you will enjoy a whole world of opportunity. There are multiple career paths open to you.

You’ll have a choice of growing and dynamic occupations, in industries employing many thousands of people. The Electrotechnical industry, for example, employs over 150,000 people working within some 20,000 companies. As a qualified craftsperson like an electrician or plumber you can expect to be in demand – after all, every household and business uses electricity and water.

Who knows how you will feel in four years time? The great thing is you will have options open to you. After your apprenticeship, you may decide to end your training there. Or you may decide to go further and progress on to higher education. You could take further qualifications such as a Technician’s Certificate, NVQ Level 4, HNC, HND, BTEC or a degree. All things that give you an edge in the job market, and you can make these choices at any time – straight after you qualify or at any time in your career

You could choose to work for a small local company, or you could work for a large multi-national contracting company and get involved in huge commercial or industrial projects like the construction of an Olympic stadium or an international airport like Heathrow Terminal 5. You could be a key team player in a vast range of projects from repairing homes to building a new a nightclub or cinema to maintaining a hospital operating theatre. You’ll be using technologies that are always evolving, challenging you to the limit but rewarding you with the knowledge that your input is vital to making it work.

You could take a management role or even decide to run your own company. And you might even think about working abroad as your qualifications will be recognised internationally.
