Introduction to Apprenticeships

At JTL we are helping thousands of young people in England and Wales to launch exciting careers as electricians, plumbers, heating and ventilating engineers and engineering maintenance operatives in the building services engineering sector through apprenticeship training.

Apprenticeships are work-based, government funded, training programmes for young people aged 16 and over that lead to a nationally recognised qualification.

They are a great way to combine practical training in a job whilst studying. Apprentices will gain hands-on experience and learn skills that employers want, helping them to develop rewarding future careers.

As an apprentice you will work alongside experienced staff, gain job-specific skills, earn a wage and get holiday pay, and get time for study related to your role. You can start an apprenticeship at any time of the year.

What is involved?

To start an apprenticeship with JTL you will need to be employed full-time in the trade you would like to complete your apprenticeship in.

You will be assigned a dedicated JTL training officer for the duration of your apprenticeship programme who will assess and monitor your skills on the job. You will also attend a JTL training centre or approved partner college for the first part of your apprenticeship to develop the necessary theoretical knowledge and skills.

For more details see our How does it work section.

How long does it take?

A JTL apprenticeship can take from 2 to 4 years depending upon the trade and level you are studying. For example, an electrical apprenticeship takes 4 years to complete and a plumbing apprenticeship can take between 2 and 4 years.

You need to be aged 16 and over for your employer to benefit from support funding. If you’re older than 19, your employer may need to put some of their own money towards your studies. For more details see our FAQs section.

JTL operates across England and Wales and partners with over 100 colleges to deliver apprenticeship courses in the Building Services Engineering sector. JTL also has several of its own dedicated training centres across the country.
