Hedy Navarro

Engineering Maintenance

Hedy went to Wakefield Girls School where she obtained her GCSEs and then went to college to get her ‘A’ levels. She found she wasn’t enjoying the college experience and knew that university was not for her, so she took a year out to decide where her future lay: “At school there was little or no information or guidance on apprenticeships – certainly not for girls in the building services engineering sector.”

She did her research and stumbled across the JTL web site – where she applied on line and looked for an employer willing to take her on. She is now in her 2nd year of her Engineering Maintenance apprenticeship working as a Medical Engineer for Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, where she is learning how to service and repair medical equipment.

“I chose this path as I thought it would be interesting and dynamic – and it is! It has definitely exceeded my expectations and working in a hospital you see a lot of things you wouldn’t normally come across!”

So what would Hedy say to a young girl who’s thinking about training as an apprentice in this field: “In this day and age girls can do whatever they want, so don’t let traditions and preconceived ideas stop you!”
