Zara Thomas

Zara is an electrical maintenance apprentice, working on both domestic and commercial projects in London. She was also runner-up in JTL’s Regional Apprentice of the Year competition in the London and East of England area.

Zara, who spends a lot of time maintaining local authority sheltered accommodation for the elderly, lives and works in the same area, so she sometimes bumps into her clients when she’s nipping to the shop to get some milk!

“I was so chuffed to be the Apprentice of the Year runner up in my area. It’s nice to know that all your hard work has been noticed and it’s given me a real confidence boost.

“I’m loving my apprenticeship and I can fix anything now! Lots of the tenants I work with are elderly or vulnerable, many are in their 90s and they’re always reassured when I turn up. They call me “their electrician” and I get made untold amounts of tea and offered so much food! There are definite benefits of being a female in this industry but, on the flip side, I can’t carry loads like the guys can. I get the job done though – I just move things in smaller quantities.”
