Wales Costs and Funding

Apprenticeships in Wales work according to the Welsh Government guidelines and additional funding may be available if you take on an apprentice aged between 16- 19 years.

The Apprenticeship Levy does not apply in Wales.

Apprenticeship Small Business Employer Incentive Programme

The Apprenticeship Employer Incentive Programme has been available since 1st August 2017.

It provides support for SME’s to recruit apprentices aged 16-19, and it helps to provide individuals and employers with the skills needed over the long-term and prevents skills shortages.

Criteria

The incentive is only available to SMEs who are new to apprenticeships or have not recruited an apprentice in the last 30 months

Support is offered to a maximum of three apprentices per employer

Support is available irrespective of the level of the apprenticeship

A payment of £3,500 (per learner) is available to employers for apprentices recruited during the periods of July-September or January - March, and a payment of £2,500 (per learner) for apprentices recruited at all other times of the year.

The full payment will be made after the apprentice has been employed for 8 months.
