Best Short Course Learner named at JTL Awards

Multi-skilled tradesman Karl Schmidt was named JTL’s ‘Best Short Course Learner’ for 2014/15 at the training provider’s annual awards ceremony last week.

Karl, who works for Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust, was awarded the accolade based upon his performance on the ‘Initial Verification’ and ‘Periodic Inspection and Testing’ courses, both certified at Level 3. These have enabled him to inspect and test new and existing electrical installations; the course having been run by JTL at Aldercar Community College in Langley Mill, near Nottingham.

Karl has been working as a multi-skilled trades person for more than 15 years working in hospitals and clinics within Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust. His role is very diverse, including out-of-hours emergency cover. It also sees him working on complex electrical faults and with highly sophisticated medical equipment, where he is supported by a medical engineering team. He joined the industry having completed an apprenticeship with the East Midlands Electricity Board.

“I was really shocked but very pleased to win JTL’s award,” said Karl. “I enjoyed the course and it’s really helped me in my day to day role, bringing opportunities to branch out and take on more responsibility.

“It’s reassuring to know there are professional development courses out there that are totally relevant to my job and I’m looking forward to the next one!”

Dave Cunliffe, Technical Trainer at JTL added: “Karl proved his ability to get stuck in and persevere, with his test marks being some of the most deserved I’ve ever seen. He came from a different background to most of the other learners so it was tougher for him, with new skills and different procedures to take on board.

“We always tailor the courses to individual needs though and Karl absorbed a great deal of knowledge in a very condensed period of time. We wish him the very best of luck with this new string to his bow”.
