CompEx celebrates landmark 50,000th certificate

23 September 2015     JTL

Since the CompEx scheme was launched following the Piper Alpha disaster in September 1994, the landmark of 50,000 certifications for the Gas & Vapour Ex01-EX05 Modules for electrical operatives who work in explosive atmospheres has been passed.

Shaun Mitchell, who attended his CompEx Ex01-014 course at EPIT Centre in Blackburn, Aberdeen, earlier this year, was the proud recipient of the 50,000th certification.

“After two years studying at college and then completing a SVQ Level 3 in Electrical Engineering Maintenance with my employer, Halliburton, I then attended and was successful in all four modules on a CompEx Course at EPIT in Aberdeen”, Shaun explained.

“This course has enhanced my understanding of electrical safety procedures, and will enable me to conduct my job responsibly as an Electronic Instrument Technical on the various oil and gas platforms in the North Sea Forties, Alpha, Bravo and Charlie Fields”, he added.

“Throughout my apprenticeship, I have been mentored by a CompEx technician and look forward in time to conducting that role myself. My line of work includes installations, inspections and general maintenance activities, and the CompEx certificate now confirms my learning and will allow me to build up my competency levels with further experience moving forward.”

CompEx Operations Manager Martin Jones was also very happy to have reached the milestone.

“It was especially pleasing to see a young craftsman progress through the oil and gas sector apprenticeship with Halliburton, proving the worth that employers that invest in young learners on structured apprentieships does deliver its rewards”, he said.

“Shaun is a credit to his profession and his knowledge of the standards and directives that determine the best practice that we work within are very high.”

JTLimited, the CompEx Certification Body, is accredited by UKAS to ISO/IEC 17024:2012 Conformity Assessment – General Requirements for bodies operating certification of persons, and operates throughout the world with a network of 48 licensed centres.
