Joe Dudley Best Apprentice for the East Midlands

13 November 2014     JTL

Joe Dudley, age 20 and from Wilford Village, Nottingham, has been named JTL’s Apprentice of the Year 2014 for the East Midlands region. His win, which saw him beat off stiff competition from five other finalists, was announced at an award ceremony held at Leicester Tigers’ Welford Road Stadium on Tuesday night (11th November 2014).

Electrician Joe will now represent the East Midlands at a national event held in London in February 2015, when JTL’s seven regional winners from across England and Wales will come together to discover who is the overall JTL Apprentice of the Year 2014.

Joe, who attended the awards with his family, was also joined by directors from Derry Building Services (DBS), Mark Townsend and Steve Burley, as well as his JTL Training Officer, Kevin Brown.

“I definitely wasn’t expecting to win because I didn’t feel the interview process had gone as well as I’d hoped,” says Joe. “My parents knew that I wasn’t confident, so we were all as shocked as each other when my name was announced! The recognition is the biggest thing. I’ve worked hard and tried to do my best throughout my apprenticeship, so it’s great to know it’s all paid off and that it’s been acknowledged. I have a testing qualification coming up soon, which will be another string to my bow, but long term I’m looking towards a site management role – although that’s a few years off yet!”

Steve Burley, DBS Director adds: “Joe’s done exceptionally well throughout his apprenticeship, despite being only just 16 when he joined us. He’s currently working on a specialist project for us at a mobile phone network data centre. He’s enjoying it tremendously and it’s great experience but we’re keen to tempt him away! We have longer term plans for Joe and are hoping he’ll progress to an HNC in the near future, with a long term eye on an office or managerial opportunity within DBS. We wish him very many congratulations and hope he’ll enjoy a long and successful career with us.”

DBS also received JTL’s award for ‘Best Employer in the East Midlands’. “It’s a real honour to receive this award,” finishes Steve. “Apprentices are at the cornerstone of our industry and the majority of our workforce here at DBS launched their careers via an apprenticeship. We recognise the importance of this route into our industry and feel a great responsibility to ensure that young people training with us receive the support and encouragement they need to excel. They are, after all, our managers and directors of tomorrow!”

Newark-based DBS takes on a minimum of six JTL apprentices each year and therefore has at least 24 young people training within the business at any one time.

Dr Ian Livsey, JTL Chairman commented on proceedings, saying: “To get to the regional final is a great achievement - we currently have more than 500 apprentices on courses in the East Midlands region, so to be chosen as one of the six best is no small thing. Their success is well worth celebrating and we wish all the regional finalists the very best in their future careers.”

The JTL East Midlands nominees were put forward, along with other apprentices, by their JTL Training Officers. Each was then selected following a series of interviews and theory tests.
