Broadstone Electrician Selected from 6,500 Apprentices

Robert Best from Broadstone in Dorset has won the top annual award from national training provider, JTL. He was named ‘National Apprentice of the Year’ at a ceremony held on Wednesday 15th March at the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) in London’s Savoy Place.

JTL – a not-for-profit organisation which specialises in delivering electrical and plumbing apprenticeships – has trained 35,000 apprentices to date. Robert was selected for the 2017 national award from the 6,500 apprentices currently on apprenticeship programmes with JTL.

Commenting on his win, Robert said: “It’s such a great privilege – I really wasn’t expecting to win so it was a genuine surprise to see my name on that screen. Becoming a qualified electrician made all my hard work worthwhile but winning this award takes it to another level. I’m so happy!”

Dad, Graham Best, added: “Robert’s apprenticeship has equipped him with some great skills but it’s also been invaluable training for life. He’s learnt the electrical trade and he’s learnt to think for himself, to problem solve and to operate as part of a team. It’s allowed him to develop into a capable and confident adult. A very positive experience all round!

Robert, 22, currently works for Powerpoint Electrical Contractors in Wimborne but hopes to start his own company before he reaches 30. Meanwhile, he’s keeping busy playing 1st XV rugby for Salisbury Rugby Club and renovating the house he recently purchased with long-term girlfriend, Louise Birchall.

Paul Grist, Robert’s Training Officer at JTL, highlighted Robert’s commitment, as well as his exceptional track record both at Bournemouth and Poole College and in the workplace.

JTL’s awards celebrate the highest achieving young trainees in the building services engineering sector, with candidates nominated from each of JTL’s regions across England and Wales on the basis of their outstanding overall performances.

“We recognised and celebrated some brilliant young talent at our awards ceremony,” said Jon Graham, JTL’s Chief Executive. “It’s been a pleasure and an inspiration getting to know Robert and his peers as part of this process.

“Without exception, our 12 finalists are bright young people with their heads very firmly screwed on. They are mature and knowledgeable and they’ve chosen to learn a life-long skill while earning a living and supporting themselves at the same time. For that alone, they must be commended. Each has followed a rigorous four year course (that’s longer than most degrees) and shown the determination to succeed.

“We wish Robert the very best of luck with his future career. He’s certainly made a great start!”

JTL is one of the UK’s leading training providers for young people in England and Wales, running apprenticeship schemes in partnership with colleges and workplaces.

Apprentices on a JTL scheme split their time between a college or training centre (where they study theory and gain underpinning knowledge) and their employer’s workplace (where they gain on the job experience). A JTL Training Officer works closely alongside each apprentice, their college and employer to provide advice and support. To find out more, go to click here.
