Tommy Willan Southern Trainee Winner

02 December 2014     JTL

Tommy Willan was named JTL’s Trainee of the Year 2014 in the Southern region at a ceremony at Tylney Hall in Hampshire last month

Traineeships are designed to raise the employability of young school leavers, equipping them with skills relevant to the workplace. The eight week programme combines work preparation and technical training with six weeks work experience.

Having completed the first year of a sports science degree, 20-year-old Tommy, from Gillingham, Kent, realised he wanted to make a start in the world of work. He left university and worked temporarily for Network Rail but knew he wanted to find a third option – an opportunity to continue his learning but to earn money at the same time. He enrolled on JTL’s Traineeship Scheme with the support of local employer, DMA Mechanical and Air Conditioning Ltd, with a view to moving on to an apprenticeship programme in the longer term.

As JTL’s Business Manager for the Southern Region, Mark Syrett, explains: “JTL operates a trainee scheme from our dedicated training college in Birmingham, but this was the first year that we have run a similar course in the South of England.

“Tommy stood out from the crowd from the start, thanks to his excellent attitude and general demeanour. He really shone throughout his traineeship, approaching all the tasks he was set with intelligence and enthusiasm, and is already working at the level that we’d normally expect of a third year apprentice, albeit under close supervision.

“We felt Tommy deserved a special award to reflect his outstanding progress. He’s set the bar very high for future trainees as we roll out to five new centres next July!”

Tommy has now started a four-year apprenticeship with DMA, and was delighted to have received the accolade.

“I really enjoyed my traineeship and I feel lucky to be working with a company able to give me so many opportunities and experiences in such a short space of time”, he said.

“Everyone has been incredibly friendly and helpful from the start and I’m loving every minute of my apprenticeship. I wasn’t anticipating the award tonight – I didn’t even know there was a trainee award – but it’s so rewarding to know I’ve made a good start.”

Tommy’s employer, Duncan Crundwell, Operations Director at DMA, adds: “We’re thrilled to have Tommy on the team at DMA. He’s made a great impression on everyone he’s met both in the office and on site, proving his value from day one. We hope he’ll have a long and successful career with us.”
